Magical Movie Makeovers

21 Jan

Ah the magical, fictional world of movies. No matter how impossible the scenario, the girl and guy always get together by the end of the movie, usually by getting a makeover. We all know those scenes in movies where the geeky/plain girl is transformed into a swan. Of course the makeover montage is accompanied by a funky soundtrack and overzealous shopping scenes. I know you’ve watched those movies where the Plain Jane turns into beauty queen material all in the flash of a makeover montage. It’s hard not to cheer when the good girl turns into a vamp or when the nerd becomes the most popular girl in school. The makeover scene in movies is usually a bunch of clips set to a funky song, that makes you want to grab some friends and work your own makeover magic.

Marilyn Monroe Look In 10 Steps

26 Apr

Marilyn Monroe defines the glamorous pin-up look of the 1950s. Sexy, yet innocent, her look is timeless and has been copied by many celebrities. Here are 10 easy steps to getting the Marilyn Monroe look:

1. Apply foundation in the lightest tone suitable, and dust over with translucent powder.

2. Use a light brown eyebrow pencil, making small feathered strokes. Blend in with eyebrow brush. Continue line to elongate brow, and draw line so it’s arched over the centre pupil.

3. Use a rosy pink blusher and apply along the cheekbones and below the apple of the cheek making sure to blend upward toward the temple.

4. Apply white eyeliner to the inner rim of the bottom eyelid to make the eye look bigger.

5. Apply a white or very light pink eyeshadow to the whole eyelid up to the eyebrow.

6. Use a black eyeliner pencil (regular or liquid) on the top lid only. Starting at the inside corner of the top lid, apply a line that’s not too thick following the curve of the lid, and extend it slightly past the outside corner of the top lid.

7. Curl eyelashes, and apply two coats of black mascara only on the top lashes. For a more dramatic affect use false eyelashes. The trick is to trim the false eyelashes, but leave the outer ends long to give that doe-eyed look that Marilyn made famous.

8. Outline and fill in lips with a deep red glossy lipstick.

9. If you want to go the whole way, draw on a beauty spot with an eyeliner pencil like Marilyn’s.

10. To finish off the look, make a side parting in your hair and do rolled curls.

You’ve got the Marilyn Monroe look, so go flaunt it!

Kristin Davis’ Top 3 Beauty Tips

25 Apr

Sex and the City 2 is on it’s glamorous way in May. From the looks of the trailer, it won’t disappoint in the fashion and beauty department. I’ll be making regular posts about the fabulous four’s style and beauty. First we have  the stylish and classic Charlotte played by the beautiful Kristin Davis. Even though Carrie is the fashionitsa, Charlotte is definitely the natural beauty of SATC.

Kristin spoke to Allure last year about her top 3 beauty tips:

1. Embrace your hair texture. “In the summer, I put my hair up in a bun, and hope for some soft waves when I take it down. But I was recently in Kenya and my hair was—whoo—big! At that point, I just let it get frizzy—silicone products make my hair feel dirty, and I think people overuse straightening irons. I was just at an event and literally every person there had ironed and shellacked hair, and honestly, that look doesn’t work for most people. If your hair has texture, let it have it.”

2. Maintain highlights (or don’t get them.) “My biggest beauty embarrassment from the past: The producers of Sex and the City really wanted me to get highlights, so I did. I went to one of the other girl’s hairdressers, but I didn’t know I had to keep going back, and no one told me. Clearly, I was not ready for high-maintenance hair. I now have this picture of me from the Playboy Mansion episode of the show wearing a ponytail, and a few inches back on my head, I have this yellow-orange stripe where my brassy highlights had grown out! I can’t believe they let me look like that!”

3. Protect your skin. “I think younger women haven’t totally grasped the importance of sunscreen and they’ll regret that later. I’m super-sensitive to the sun, so I use a moisturizer containing sunscreen. I just shot a film called Couples Retreat in Bora Bora, so I was always reapplying after lunch. If I forgot, I got blotchy, and the makeup artist had to correct that with makeup.”

Curly Vs Straight Hair

24 Apr

It’s a question that’s been hotly debated for years – curly or straight. Girls with straight hair want curly hair, and girls with curly hair want straight hair. I personally was born with dead straight hair. When I was a little girl I desperately wanted curly hair, so I used to pray for it every night (seriously!). Then one day I got my wish. My hair actually started going curly, and has stayed that way. Well, it was probably just my curly hair genes kicking in (my mom’s side has curly hair). Of course once my hair was curly, I wanted it straight. Yes I know it’s ironic!

In the pic above Taylor Swift’s famous curls have been straightened. Whether you have curly or straight hair you need to look after it.

Here are L’OREAL PARIS’ top 10 haircare tips for picture-perfect hair:

Tip 1

After shampoo and conditioning, be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly. Left-over product dulls hair.

Tip 2

Distributing conditioner through your hair with a wide-toothed comb will leave your hair shiny and tangle-free.

Tip 3

Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. Conditioning your roots will weigh your hair down.

Tip 4

If your hair is really dry, deep-condition at home. Apply conditioner to clean, damp hair; slip on a plastic cap and let your hair absorb for minutes.

Tip 5

Rubbing your hair with a towel when it’s wet can ruffle the cuticle and cause tangles, so gently squeeze out excess water.

Tip 6

Before blow drying, protect your hair with a styling product such as a conditioning milk, cream, or serum.

Tip 7

Move your blow dryer from roots to ends to avoid frizz and shredding your hair cuticles.

Tip 8

For smooth results, brush as you blow dry in the same direction. It will prevent your cuticle from roughing up.

Tip 9

Make sure your hair is thoroughly dry before styling with a flat iron or curling iron to avoid frizz.

Tip 10

For a fuller look, part or style your hair in the opposite direction.
