The Carrie Diaries

3 Mar

Get ready Sex and the City fanatics because the prequel to the much loved series and spin-off movies is on its glamorous way. The Carries Diaries, is a Young Adult novel  written by Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell. It focuses on Carrie Bradshaw as a teen who moves to New York City from a small town. It picks up with Carrie in her senior year in The Eighties (expect lots of cheesy, over-the-top Eighties fashion ladies!). This coming-of-age story explores Carrie’s family life, (something that was neglected in the series and movies), sex (something that definitely wasn’t neglected), love, friendship, and of course Manhattan.

AnnaSophia Robb has been cast as the iconic character Carrie Bradshaw, the role that made Sarah Jessica Parker a famous fashionista. Robb is known for her roles as Violet in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and surfer Bethany Hamilton in Soul Surfer.

I personally am looking forward to watching The Carrie Diaries. If Gossip Girl and the original Sex and the City series had a love child, it would be  The Carrie Diaires. AnnaSophia Robb is beautiful and talented, but I just hope she can fill those sparkly Manolos …

Leap Year

1 Mar

I know I’ve been guilty of neglecting this blog for about a year but I’ve decided to blog regularly from now on.

I read the British online newspaper the Daily Mail every morning while curled up on the sofa drinking a cup of coffee. On a side note, it’s amazing how a few years ago I would have been curled up with a magazine or newspaper but now it’s my trusty laptop I look to for my daily celebrity and news fix. Anyway, while perusing the articles yesterday I came across an article about hundreds of women all over England who proposed to their boyfriends yesterday on Leap Day, which comes around once every four years.  Every leap year there is a free day, February 29, when it is acceptable and even encouraged for women to propose to men. My boyfriend mentioned how weird it must be to have been born on a Leap Day and only get to have a proper birthday once every four years. Anyway, back to the point …

Now, if you’re an old-fashioned girl like me, the thought of even asking a guy on a date, let alone proposing to a guy, is both horrifying and unromantic at the same time. But for hundreds and perhaps thousands of women, yesterday was the day when they took the bull by the horns and popped the question to the men they loved. I’m sure there were a lot of engagements and probably some break-ups. Usually the guy wants to be the one to plan a romantic proposal, get down on one knee and ask his beloved to marry him, and usually the girl dreams of the moment when her prince takes her hand and places a diamond ring on her finger. But for many women it seems they’ve grown tired of waiting for their fairy tale. They’re sick of waiting for their prince to come and rescue them on a white horses. Instead they created their own fairy tale yesterday.

I first heard about the Leap Day tradition from the movie Leap Year. In the movie Anna (Amy Adams) travels to Dublin, Ireland to propose to her boyfriend on February 29 because according to Irish tradition a man who receives a proposal on Leap Day must accept it.

I have to applaud the women who took a leap (no pun intended) of faith yesterday and proposed to the loves of their lives, but I personally am waiting for the moment when my boyfriend gets down on one knee, looks me in the eyes, takes my hand, and asks me to be his wife.

Magical Movie Makeovers

21 Jan

Ah the magical, fictional world of movies. No matter how impossible the scenario, the girl and guy always get together by the end of the movie, usually by getting a makeover. We all know those scenes in movies where the geeky/plain girl is transformed into a swan. Of course the makeover montage is accompanied by a funky soundtrack and overzealous shopping scenes. I know you’ve watched those movies where the Plain Jane turns into beauty queen material all in the flash of a makeover montage. It’s hard not to cheer when the good girl turns into a vamp or when the nerd becomes the most popular girl in school. The makeover scene in movies is usually a bunch of clips set to a funky song, that makes you want to grab some friends and work your own makeover magic.
